Accentuational Peculiarities of Structural Class IV noun Verbatives in Southwestern Subdialects of the Ukrainian Language.

Abstract

In the article the peculiarities of stressing Structural Class IV noun verbs in southwestern subdialects of the Ukrainian language in correlation with their accentuation in the variants of the Ukrainian literary language (modern one included) have been analyzed. It has been found out that most of the verbatives defined are characterized by general semantics of process or state (acquiring state or staying in it), areal regionality or even locality (Boikovian, local Maramorous, Hutsulian and over-Dniesterian subdialects), stem derivativeness, low usage and derivation productivity, ability of their prefixed derivates to acquire perfect aspect grammemes, sporadicity of semantic correlation with one-root derivates of other structural classes, grammatical paradigm incompleteness, phonetic and morphological variance and some of them - by connexity of root morphemes. It has been noted that despite being rooted into pre-Slavic language community and fixed in the literary language variants not all of them underwent normalization in the modern Ukrainian language. It has also been found out that defined verbatives prevail with suffixal accentuation caused by derivational processes. Both stress types testify to correlation with late pre-Slavic baritone accent paradigm (its Variants I and II). Variant accentuation of the verbatives analyzed is conditioned by stress differences in various subdialects, by the influence of lexicographic tradition and in some cases by versioning factors. Prefixal verbatives represent stress correlation with motivating derivatives. Some of the verbs in the southwestern variant of the literary language and thus, in modern Ukrainian have different stressing which is mostly caused by extralinguistic factors.
