Action of Root-Endophytic Fungi of Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers against Cancer Cell Lines and Human Pathogens
Journal Title: Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences - Year 2017, Vol 7, Issue 1
Abstract
The aim of the study was to isolate and identify the promising antibacterial and anticancer metabolites produced by fungal endophytes found in the roots (underground roots) of Tinospora cordifolia. Plant endophytic fungi are the important, novel resource of natural bioactive metabolites with their potential applications in various industries including medicine. Underground roots of healthy T. cordifolia were collected and the fungal endophytes were isolated using Luria-Bertani agar medium at standard conditions. Pure cultures were raised and identified on the basis of the colonial morphology and the characteristics of fungal spores. Considering the importance of this plant, antibacterial activity was assayed using four human pathogenic bacteria in bioactive metabolites. After screening, MTT assay was performed in the crude extract. The results show that although significant antibacterial activities were found in the crude extract against human pathogens, no appreciable anticancer activity was found in MCF-7 cell line.
