Aerodynamic Design of a HAWT Blade for Indian Wind Condition

Abstract

Wind turbine works by converting the kinetic energy of the wind into electrical energy that can be supplied. Present work gives an optimization method for blade of VESTAS 1.65 MW horizontal axis wind turbine according to Indian wind condition which is not as good as European countries. For doing this optimization the theory used is Blade Element Momentum (BEM) Theory. In this work the profile taken is NACA 634-221 and the data are evaluated according to the properties of this profile. Computer program is developed for getting power coefficient curve with varying parameters such as tip speed ratio, lift and drag coefficients. Other parameter like chord distribution and twist distribution is also optimized for good performance. Results are compared with experimental data found in literature.
