Abstract
One can without doubt argue that John Amos Comenius had an influence on Slovenian pedagogy and didactics. The Slovenian pedagogy press has been reporting of him since 1871; in the begin-ning on his role as a linguist and later as a pedagogue and especially educationalist. Three edi-tions of his most popular book – The Great Didactic – were published in Slovenian in 1893, 1958 and 1995; all eras in which Slovenia was part of different socio-political systems (Austro-Hungarian Empire, Yugoslavia and, today, Slovenia). Experts from Slovenia, who studied the work of Comenius, labelled him as a pedagogue and the founder of basic education. Further-more, he is also seen as the ideologist of basic schools, and as a pedagogue and educationalist who supported the concept of new, friendly schools. In this article we describe him as a vision-ary of today’s schools. We highlight only a few of his thoughts and ideas which, even centuries after being written, remain worthy of consideration for contemporary pedagogy, and are related to learning environments, inclusive education, multisensory learning, multiple intelligences, active teaching, holistic education and communication. We conclude by stating that much of what we are researching and studying today has its roots in Comenius’ work. Therefore, even when exploring current issues researchers need to ask where the roots lie or to whom are the concepts attributed, and repeatedly examine the classics of pedagogy, to which Comenius rightly belongs.
