Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 49

Abstract

Alexandre Jaba, who was a Russian diplomat, met Mela Mehmudê Bazidî when he was a consul of Erzurum and learned Kurdish from him, and with the help of leading scholars such as Bazidî, he also collected a large number of manuscripts related to Kurdish language, culture, history and folklore in a collection of his own name. Jaba sent this collection to the Petersburg Academy of Sciences to be used for research purposes. In addition to Kurdish works, there are also five Turkish works in the Jaba’s Collection. The translations named Reyâhîn-i Aşk which brought in Turkish by Aşık-i Sipkî in masnavi form, and by Âkif-i Vanî in a long poem form (terkib-i bend) are the first Turkish translations of Mem û Zîn. Fuzûlî’s masnavi of Leylâ and Mecnun, Bazidî's Kurdish-Turkish dictionary and three pieces of verse belonging to Nesîmî are other Turkish works in the Collection.
