An analytical reading of the content and structural components of Eugène Ionesco’s Rhinoceros
Journal Title: Journal of Science and today’s world - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 12
Abstract
Eugène Ionesco is considered as one of the forerunners of new French theater of the absurd movement and has been famous among his generation due to his inclination towards absurdism. Although the dramatic characteristics of Rhinoceros have been explored by different researchers, the literary characteristics of this work as a cases study have not been explored. This literary work is represented as a new experience in presenting structural and content aspects, and, by exploring the semiotics in its content and meaning (philosophy-based view of alienation, illogicality, stream of consciousness, the text’s conceptual aesthetics in textual, inter-textual and hypertexual aspects) and structural elements (plot, character, theme, dialogue, atmosphere and dramatic expression), this work is considered as an anti-structuralist text in the new playwriting style. The findings and the results of this study that is conducted based on library materials and an analytical-interpretational reading of the play indicate that absurdism and nihilism as the thinking and philosophical motifs of this text on one hand and anti-structural signs in the structural patterns of the text are evident.
