An evaluation of waypoint averaging procedure used in Garmin recreational GNSS receivers

Abstract
Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) have become a very popular tool used for monitoring human’s locomotion. In most cases position determination accuracy obtained with the aid of code receivers used mostly by unprofessional users is sufficient enough. However, there are situations in which more precise measurements are needed. Such may be the case when determining a cache position in a geocaching terrain game. In this article the waypoint averaging procedure imple-mented in Garmin recreational receivers has been assessed. The results obtained in three trials (#1 – determining the position without averaging, #2 – determining the position with averaging, #3 - determining the position with the use of a few samples) were compared to the POLREF reference point, which is part of the Polish basic geodetic control network. The CEP, DRMS and 2DRMS accuracy measures were calcula-ted respectively as: trial #1 – 1.06, 1.27, 2.55 m; #2 – 1.11, 1.34, 2.69 m and #3 – 0.67, 0.71, 0.73 m. Thus functionality of determining the position averaging procedure with the use of a few samples (#3) has been confirmed. Lack of significant differences between trial #1 and #2 was justified by a favorable constellation of satellites (very low DOP coefficients) as well as land configuration in the reference point.
