The influence of basketball rule modifications on shooting effectiveness in Polish Basketball League

Abstract
The goal of this survey was to evaluate the influence of the rule of extending the distance of the three-point line and its effect on the Polish Basketball League players’ shooting percentage. The statistics of basketball players occurring in PLK (Polish Basketball League) in the seasons 2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 have been analyzed by using the criteria of different positions on the basketball court. The results of study showed that the change of rules did affect the percentage of three-point shooting. The number of completed 3 point shots have been reduced. At the same time the number of attempted 3-point shots for two points has not increased. At the same time, a smaller percentage of 2-point shots and 1-point ones has been observed in comparison to seasons before the change of rules took place. The change of distance of the three-point line did not cause lowering of shooting percentage in particular groups of basketball players (playing on different position). Players from group number two (186-193cm tall) and number four (over 200cm tall) coped with the change of rules in the best way. The largest three point shooting percentage decreased among the playmaker players (175-185cm).
