An investigation of the work-engagement levels of nurses<p>Hemşirelerin çalışmaya tutkunluk düzeylerinin incelenmesi

Abstract

Purpose: The research was conducted to assess the levels of work-engagement of nurses. Method: As a descriptive research, the current one was conducted with a number of 743 nurses from 10 puplic hospitals in Istanbul. Demographics form and the Utrecht Work-Engagement Scale (UWES) was used in data collection. The data was analyzed using different statistical techniques including Confirmatory Factor Analysis, descriptive statistics, t-Test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlations Analysis, LSD. Findings: 87,9% of the participants were women, 57,9% of them had bachelor’s degree, 39,9% of them had 3 to 10 years of occupational experience. Mean age of the participants was 32,22±7,79. Work-Engagement Scale total mean score and scores for its subscales, which are Vigor, Dedication, and Absorption, were as follows, respectively; 3.88±.93, 3.73±1.03, 4.34±1.07, 3.66±1.06. Nurses who work in state hospitals, male nurses, executive nurses, and nurses who are older than 42 years of age, have 11 to 18 years of experience, selected their department voluntarily, working only in day shifts, participate in scientific activities, satisfied with their profession, have leisure time interests displayed statistically higher levels of work-engagement compared to the others (p&lt;0,05). Positive correlations were obtained between work-engagement levels, and age, years of occupational experience, years of departmental experience of the nurses (p&lt;0,05). Conclusion: Work-engagement scores of nurses were above average. Further, work-engagement levels of nurses have been determined to differ as a function of some demographic and occupational characteristics. Work-engagement is a positive concept that needs to be investigated due to its valuable contributions both to the employees and institutions. Extended English summary is in the end of Full Text PDF (TURKISH) file. ÖzetAmaç: Araştırma hemşirelerin çalışmaya tutkunluk düzeylerinin belirlenmesi amacıyla yapıldı. Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı nitelikte yapılan araştırma, İstanbul ilinde 10 kamu hastanesinde çalışmakta olan 743 hemşire ile gerçekleştirildi. Verilerin toplanmasında Tanıtıcı Bilgi Formu ve Çalışmaya Tutkunluk Ölçeği (UWES) kullanıldı. Verilerin değerlendirilmesi; Doğrulayıcı Faktör Analizi,  tanımlayıcı istatistiksel analizler, Pearson Korelasyon Analizi, Bağımsız Grup t-testi, ANOVA ve LSD testi ile yapıldı. Bulgular: Hemşirelerin yaş ortalaması 32,22±7,79, %87,9’u kadın, %57,9’u lisans mezunu, %39,9’u 3-10 yıl mesleki deneyime sahip olduğu saptandı. Çalışmaya Tutkunluk Ölçeği toplam ve dinçlik, adanmışlık ve yoğunlaşma alt boyut puan ortalamaları sırasıyla; 3.88±.93, 3.73±1.03, 4.34±1.07, 3.66±1.06 olarak bulundu. Devlet hastanesinde çalışanların, erkeklerin, 42 ve üstü yaş grubunda olanların, yönetici hemşirelerin, 11-18 yıl mesleki deneyime sahip olanların, çalıştığı bölümü isteyerek seçenlerin, gündüz çalışanların, bilimsel etkinliklere katılan hemşirelerin, mesleğinden memnun olanların, serbest zamanlarda farklı ilgi alanı olanların çalışmaya tutkunluk puanlarının daha yüksek olduğu ve farkın istatiksel olarak anlamlı olduğu saptandı (p˂0.05). Hemşirelerin çalışmaya tutkunluk puanı ile yaşları, mesleki deneyim ve bölümde çalışma süreleri arasında pozitif yönde anlamlı ilişki bulundu (p˂0.05). Sonuç: Hemşirelerin çalışmaya tutkunluk puanlarının orta seviyenin üzerinde olduğu görüldü.  Çalışmaya tutkunluk düzeyinin hemşirelerin bazı demografik ve mesleki özelliklerine göre farklılaştığı saptandı. Çalışmaya tutkunluk birey ve organizasyona olumlu katkıları nedeni ile incelenmesi gereken pozitif bir kavramdır.
