Journal Title: The Odisha Journal of Psychiatry - Year 2018, Vol 26, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: Over past two decades Internet usage has revolutionized our country and increased internet use has begun to pose lot of problems. Our objective is to review the current literature on Internet addiction in India and to analyse the socio-demographic variables, prevalence and risk factors of internet addiction in Indian population in comparison to western literature. Methods: An extensive literature search was conducted in the Medline databases. Studies which focused primarily on assessment of internet addiction on a whole in India done between 2000-2017 were included. Based on our inclusion criteria we reviewed twenty two studies in this review. Results: All Twenty two studies reported in the review are cross sectional studies. Most of the studies are done in younger population. Young's internet addiction test questionnaire is most commonly used instrument to assess internet addiction. Prevalence of IA ranged between 0.3% to 11.8%. Male gender, staying alone, lower age of internet usage, using mobile for internet access, more monthly expenditure on the internet and more time spent daily on the internet are found to be significantly associated with internet addiction. Conclusion: The data indicates Internet addiction is an emerging problem and there is a need to consider IA in current classificatory systems. Also there is a need for research in the fields of pharmacological and psychological management for the patients diagnosed with IA.
