Anabolic-catabolic changes in high mountain expedition members
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2010, Vol 26, Issue 5
Abstract
Background. Mountain trekking causes both physical and mental fatigue. The goal of this paper is to explain the changes in serum testosterone and cortisol levels and the aanbolic/catabolic ratios of these hormones in participants of mountain expeditions. Material and methods. The sample comprised participants of two mountain expeditions – to Elbrus (10 males) and to Mont Blanc (10 males). The differences in participants' age were insignificant. 6 participants reached Elbrus and 7 participants reached Mont Blanc. Blood for biochemical tests was taken in the morning, before and after return from the expedition. Cortisol and testosterone levels were determined by means of radioimmunoassay. Results. Mean cortisol and testosterone levels, measured prior to the expeditions in all participants were 309±174 nmol/l, and 20.0±6.1 nmol/l respectively, and after the expedition they significantly increased to 395±231 nmol/l (p<0.04), and 22.8±7.8 nmo/l respectively (p<0.02). The subgroups of ”conquerors” and ”non-conquerors” did not significantly differ in terms of mean hormone levels and the anbolic-catabolic ratios. Conclusions. Testosterone and cortisol levels and their anabolic-catabolic ratios are not the factors indicative of the potential to reach mountain summits.
