IMPACT OF GYMSTICK EXERCISES ON SELECTED RESPIRATORY PARAMETERS AND CORE STABILITY AND BALANCE IN PEOPLE OVER 55 YEARS OF AGE. PRELIMINARY REPORT
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2011, Vol 27, Issue 3
Abstract
Balance disorder and decline in respiratory capacity associated advancing age, in the elderly, could constitute significant problem hindering normal daily functioning. Exercises with the use Gymstick (GM) guarantees individualized, attractive and effective workouts. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of exercise with Gymstick gear on core stability and balance as well as on selected respiratory parameters. 38 adults aged 56-77 years were tested. They were randomly divided into two groups: test (23 persons) and control (15 persons). Both groups underwent 45-minutes exercises, conducted twice a week for 4 consecutive weeks. The experimental group practiced with the Gymstick gear, while the control group had Low Impact Aerobic. The exercises were adapted to elderly people’s abilities [1]. Selected respiratory parameters were tested in both groups using the Pneumo spirometer 2005. Balance ability was assessed using Libra balance platform, stand-on-one-leg test, and get-up-and-go test. Statistical evaluations of the results were carried out using Wilcoxon test and Mann-Whitney tests. P<0.05 was chosen as materiality threshold. Statistically significant improvement in core stability and balance was achieved in adults exercising with the Gymstick gear. Statistically significant improvement in the peak expiratory flow (PEF) has also been demonstrated. 1. In the experimental group, workouts with the Gymstick statistically significantly contributed to improved balance. 2. Cycle of workouts with GM, the experimental group registered statistically significant improvement in peak expiratory flow than aerobics exercises. 3. Attained results need to be verified on the basis of a longer duration of the experiment, and a larger sample of randomized group of tested subjects.
