TORONTO CHARTER FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: GLOBAL CHALLENGE AND THE GUIDELINES FOR MULTIDIRECTIONAL ACTIVITIES INCREASING THE LEVEL OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 2
Abstract
In 2006 in Atlanta in the 10th anniversary of publishing Physical Activity and Health: A Report of the Surgeon General, the First International Congress of Physical Activity and Public Health was organized (ICPAPH). During the congress, an urgent need for detailed and multi-aspect studies on the role of physical activity in prophylaxis of civilization-related diseases was highlighted. Two years later, during the Second ICPAPH Congress in Amsterdam, the results of many studies concerning the methods of physical activity level assessment, the problems related to sedentary behaviours and attempts to determine the factors favouring physical activity were presented. Similar problems were discussed during the next ICPAPH congress which was held in Toronto in 2010. This scientific meeting with over 1200 participants – scientists from 47 countries - resulted in the mutual declaration called “Toronto Charter for Physical Activity: Global Call for Action. In the document, the governments, public institutions, non-governmental organizations, scientific milieus and influential natural persons are called for action to increase physical activity level on the population scale. The paper presents a review of articles, based on which the Toronto Charter was developed and published. The most important contents as well as the current trends and guidelines for activities in different fields of social life on the national, regional and local scales are discussed.
