Abstract
Analysis of the concept of career in the theories of foreign scholars. The article presents the results of theoretical analysis of the problem of professional career in the theories of foreign researchers. The authors describe the effects of cultural and historical environment and personal activities on the choice of a certain career. Based on the analysis of the theories proposed by foreign scholars, the main approaches to understanding career include: 1) the meaningful approach: career as an occupation, profession; 2) the procedural approach: career as a professional advancement; career as an official promotion; 3) the status approach: career as an indicator of personal success; 4) the role-play approach: career as a social role that meets social expectations (standards of success); 5) the value approach: career as a consistency of personal and social needs, goals, values and interests; 6) the personal-professional approach: career as a process of professional self-determination; 7) the biographical approach: career as personal work records; career as life in general; 8) the acmeological approach: career as a process of self-realization via professional activities. The value system of an individual plays the leading role in their choosing career and life path as well as in their career development and professional self-realization. Career is defined as self-actualization of personality in professional activities. The combination of personal and professional development is harmonious when the career is filled with personal meanings and values that agree with the general orientation of the individual. A promising area of research is the system of personal values and meanings and dynamics of students' career orientations as well as development of students' career development programs.
