Anti-ulcer activity of aqueous extract of Sesbania grandiflora Linn stems in experimental animals
Journal Title: Indian Journal of Research in Pharmacy and Biotechnology - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 4
Abstract
To evaluate gastric anti-ulcer potency of aqueous extract of Sesbania grandiflora Linn (Fabaceae) stems in experimental animals. The extract was investigated in ethanol induced ulcer models in Wister rats. In this model ulcer index was determined as common parameters. The extract was ingested orally at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg to the ulcer induced rats for determining the potency of ulcer inhibition. The extract (250 and 500 mg/kg) showed significant (P<0.05) reduction in ulcer index as compared to the control in ethanol induced ulcer model. It can be concluded that the extract possesses anti-ulcer effect as well as ulcer healing properties, which might be due to antisecretory properties.
