Approaches for in vitro selection of genetically modified Digitalis L. plants

Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2018, Vol 18, Issue 2

Abstract

Medicinal plants of Digitalis genus are well known for its ability to produce cardenolides as digoxin. These cardiotonic glucosides are irreplaceable for heart failure treatment. In addition, cardenolides have acquired added value due to its potential application on several types of cancer treatment. Metabolic engineering is a promising biotechnological tool to enhance cardenolides biosynthesis in vitro. The differentiation of transformed plants is a key step to achieve efficiency in genetic transformation process. The aim of this review was to synthesize the main aspects to make an efficient selection scheme in Digitalis L. It includes a compendium of most used selection marker genes features, main principles for transgenic events selection, an analysis of selective agents used in the genus and their effectiveness in genetic transformation. Finally, perspectives of research in the subject are exposed.
