Assessment of Awareness and Knowledge of Medical Students and Interns about Conditions Relevant to Metabolic Syndrome at King Khalid University

Abstract

Introduction: The metabolic syndrome is defined by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) as three or more of the following: fasting plasma glucose levels ≥ 6.1 mmol/liter, serum triglycerides ≥ 1.7 mmol/liter, serum HDL cholesterol < 1.0 mmol/liter, blood pressure ≥ 130/85 mmHg, and waist girth > 102 cm. Use of waist circumference > 94 cm was suggested for some men who might be genetically susceptible to insulin resistance. Methodology: A self-reported online questionnaire was administered to 110 medical students and interns at King Khalid University. Questions were covered the following condition: diabetes, hypertension, high serum cholesterol, arteriosclerosis, stroke, and myocardial infarction. Results: A sample of 110 students and interns (70% males and 30% females), participated in this study, 25.9 % were 5th year medical students, 30.4 % were 6th medical students, 43.8% were medical intern. Students showed good knowledge regarding most of items addressing condition relevant to metabolic syndrome. Conclusion: Students and interns at King Khalid University show adequate level of knowledge in regard condition relevant to metabolic syndrome.
