Assessment of the direction of changes in the range of motion in joints as a result of sanatorium treatment of rural women with musculoskeletal pain

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2012, Vol 18, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction: In spite of the introduction of significant technological improvements and technical equipment in farming, the lifestyle of rural women significantly differs from that of women from urban areas. The women›s participation in work related to crop and animal production consists predominantly of physical work, putting a large strain on the locomotive system; thus, diseases of the locomotive system are an important health problem among rural women. The availability of sanatorium treatment in the Farmer›s Social Insurance Fund (KRUS) rehabilitation centres may contribute to an improvement in most common health complaints in this group of women.Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the effect of 3-week rehabilitation treatment on the range of spine mobility and large joint mobility in rural women.Material and methods: The participants of the study were 95 women farmers with complaints within the locomotive system, who underwent programmed rehabilitation during their stay at the KRUS Farmer Rehabilitation Centre in Szklarska Poręba. Goniometric measurements of the functional movement of large joints and measurements of mobility of the cervical spine of the women were carried out twice. The material was analysed using statistical methods evaluating the direction of changes in the studied parameters in age groups. Results: In spite of the sanatorium treatment, both in the group of younger and older women, no statistically significant differences were noted between the first and the second series of measurements in terms of bending of the hip and knee joints. In older women, slight deterioration in the range of backward bending of the cervical spine was noted. Conclusions: The rehabilitation treatment and applied therapeutic procedures resulted in favourable changes in the tested parameters contributing to an improvement in the health and functional fitness of the studied rural women. It was indicated in the study that significantly smaller ranges of movement, in particular in hip and knee joints, compared to reference values, may be related to the lifestyle of rural women and onerous physical work, as well as their age.Key words: joint mobility, rural women, spa rehabilitation
