Attitudes of special school teachers toward people with disabilities

Journal Title: Szkoła Specjalna - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue 1

Abstract

The article attempts to show the attitudes of special educators toward people with disabilities. It raises the issue of the perception of the social situation of people with disabilities and the issue of their image and its significance for the perception of people who are universally stigmatized as “different.” The aim of the interpretations made is to determine whether the respondents - special school teachers – adopt and share common stereotypes about people with disabilities or if their interactions with people with disabilities contribute to their greater openness and willingness to establish closer relationships with individuals with various challenges. The analysis will also aim to gain information concerning the respondents’ beliefs about people with intellectual disabilities and individuals with other disabilities, chronic conditions or mental illness. It will also examine their attitudes toward the need to provide support and integration activities. The article also attempts to identify the tendencies in the respondents' interactions with people with disabilities which could help to determine whether special educators seek contact with people with disabilities or whether they try to avoid them. The diagnostic poll method was used in order to find the answers to the questions and meet the objectives set out in the study. Analysis of the research findings is presented in two subsections. The first one concerns the popular image of people with disabilities and its significance for the perception of people with disabilities by teachers. The second one analyzes the findings in terms of information special educators have about disabilities and attempts to determine what groups of individuals with disabilities the respondents prefer and what groups they do not want to build relationships with.
