THE LIFE OF A PERSON WITH A MOTOR DISABILITY – CASE STUDY IN THE CONTEXT OF AARON ANTONOVSKY’S SALUTOGENESIS

Journal Title: Szkoła Specjalna - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 1

Abstract

This article centers on a case study in the light of the concept of salutogenesis by Aaron Antonovsky. Focusing on successful coping in every situation is the essence of salutogenesis. In this approach, the researcher’s attention is directed to the resources that help an individual to cope with common stressors. The salutogenic approach is in opposition to the pathogenic approach, which limits itself to detecting psychological factors that cause diseases and somatic dysfunctions. A descriptive case study was used in which a person with a motor disability (juvenile idiopathic arthritis) took part. The participant – Karol (18 years old) is a student of a high school with integrated classes. In accordance with the perspective used in the study, the following questions were asked: What makes a human being (Karol) healthier?, What factors are responsible for a human being’s (Karol’s) maintaining his current position on the continuum at worst or his moving toward the end – ‘health’? Material from a narrative interview was used for analysis. For analytical purposes, the sense of coherence was used as the central category in salutogenesis and its three components were referred to: comprehensibility (refers to the extent to which a person perceives the stimuli that he/she encounters as having a cognitive sense); manageability (refers to the extent to which a person perceives available resources in order to meet the demands posed by new events); and meaningfulness (expresses the motivational aspect). The interview was the basis of the search for resistance resources, which are the source of coherence.
