AUTHOR’S TALE ON FOLKLORISTIC MOTIF («THE TALE OF THE GUELDER-ROSE FLUTE» BY O. ZABUZHKO)

Abstract

The research subject of this article is the existential problematic of Zabuzhko’s novella «The tale of the guelder-rose flute», one of the most interesting Ukrainian prose texts written during the turn of the century (1999). It is not only about the sin’s existential, but rather, a sin of dismay, which is dangerous because of the chain reaction, that is capable to embrace the spiritual space of family as «The tale...» shows. This topic is important looking at the Ukrainian realities of the last decades and literature, because it interprets those realities. The purpose of the article is to analyze the poetical ressource of the novella, including the linguistic one, that enabled the writer to realize the important existential problem of the modern Ukrainian nation. The article takes into account the experience of other scholars of Zabuzhko’s work but foremost of V. Skurativsky, who drew attention to the unique poetics of the work. The microanalysis of the aesthetical structure, especially the linguistic parts, gives reason to say that his problematics are not limited by gender, and cover the whole society, where gender is only the most revealing piece. The narrative strategies of the writer’s folkloristic-mythological thinking were researched, on the one hand, providing an ideally expected atmosphere (folklore), and on the other hand they completely ruin that atmosphere (the myth of Cain and Abel). The potential difference gives a special tension to the narration. The methodological basis of the study consists of the productive ideas of archetypal criticism and existential interpretation. The scientific innovation is the analysis of the existential sin of dismay in Zabuzhko’s «Tale of the guelder-rose flute». The results of this research can be used in further studies of Zabuzhko’s artistic world and in university studies, where the research results can be used in the understanding of the contemporary literary process in Ukraine.
