Azo dyes – biological activity and synthetic strategy

Journal Title: CHEMIK nauka-technika-rynek - Year 2012, Vol 66, Issue 12

Abstract

Azo dyes are the largest and the most popular group of dyes demonstrating the full palette of colors. These compounds, containing –N=N– group as a characteristic chromophore, are mainly obtained in diazotization and coupling reaction. Nowadays, they constitute around 60% of all dyes used in food and textile industry. Besides coloring properties, their biological activities are known, being a risk factor for humans and environment, but having certain pharmacological potential. This review is focused on presentation of chosen biological properties of title compounds, in the context of their medicinal applications, environmental hazard and modern synthetic strategies.
