Biblioteka Regia Laurentina w El Escorial – echo dawnej świetności hiszpańskiego dworu królewskiego

Journal Title: Bibliotheca Nostra. Śląski Kwartalnik Naukowy - Year 2015, Vol 41, Issue 3

Abstract

The Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo monastic and palace complex was built in El Escorial as a tribute to St. Lawrence, to commemorate the victory over the French in the battle of Saint-Quentin of 1557. Originally, it served a dual function – as a research centre on the Counter-reformation and the Spanish Royal Family necropolis. One of the essential elements of the monumental building is the Regia Laurentina Royal Library, which under its founder's (King Phillip II) assumptions was meant to rival the Vatican Library. This work explores the origins, history and current collections of the El Escorial’s library. Nowadays, the place itself is a unique museum of books. Although the library no longer fulfi ls its original purpose, it remains an evidence of the former glory of the Royal Court of Spain.
