Biblioteki urzędów w Królestwie Polskim i ich rola w kształtowaniu kultury biurokratycznej w XIX wieku

Abstract

The aim of the article is to present the libraries of selected offices of the Kingdom of Poland and to show their importance in shaping of the bureaucratic culture. On the basis of available archival sources, subscriber lists and analysis of the literature on the subject, it should be noted that the libraries have been collected in the offices at least since the time of the Duchy of Warsaw. The rich book collections, systematically supplemented, were in the central offices: in the Senate, in the government commissions, in the military department, at the Court of Appeal of the Kingdom of Poland. In the libraries collected prints useful in the work of clerks: legal and administrative books, studies in selected fields – agriculture, industry, trade, forestry, military etc. The books have often been used by clerks as a source of expertise. Some of the libraries of the central offices became universal because they collected books and magazines from various fields, which going beyond strictly professional subjects. More modest handy book collections were created at provincial commissions and municipal offices of the Kingdom of Poland.
