Abstract
The Russian imperial court was appointed by Peter I with the implementation of “the Table of Ranks”, in which the service at the court was initially separated from other types of services. When in 1894 Nicholas II inherited the throne, the court was still a small but gradually intensified the tendency to transform the court title into a sign exaltation within the bureaucratic apparatus, which led to a spectacular increase in the nomination. The author analyzes the data on the service of clerks who were given the court titles and he notes very uneven distribution between the ministries. Moreover, for the representatives of the national elite, such as the Grand Duchy of Finland or the Kingdom of Poland, the sinecure was established giving the opportunity to be included to the imperial service without fulfilling any duties. The transformations of described period changed the membership of the imperial court into a privileged group of the ruling class. The socio-political role of the court ranks went far beyond the ceremonial sphere.
