Biological and yield effects of the deer family (Cervidae) grazing on winter oilseed rape

Journal Title: Rośliny Oleiste - Oilseed Crops - Year 2013, Vol 34, Issue 2

Abstract

Quantitative assessment of the extent of losses in productivity of winter oilseed rape plants and crop caused by deer animals was conducted during two growing seasons – 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 in Śląsk Zielony (Green Silesia). The assessment included the fields of winter oilseed rape Californium cultivar. Oilseed rape fields which were taken into account had an area of 1 to 10 hectares, and were situated near the forest complex – „Kobiórskie Forest” and „Pszczyna Forest”. Before the harvest, plant samples were collected from damaged and undamaged fields in order to make selected biometric measurements. Deer feeding on rape plants reduced seed yield several times per unit area. Main shoot total damage decreased the number of developed pods. The number of seeds in the pods was very low, and small seeds, poorly developed, were characterized by reduced weight. In relation to side branches grown on damaged rape plants deer feeding led mainly to a decline in the pods number. The pods grown on the damaged side shoots of oilseed rape developed a similar number of seeds, whose weight of 1000 seeds was similar to that of intact plants. Deer feeding led to the reduction of the length of pod stems which grew out of the rape main shoot. Significant reduction of the stem and fruitful part of pods caused a considerable decrease in the number of seeds.
