Biologically-Induced Precipitation of Minerals in a Medium with Zinc Under Sulfate-Reducing Conditions
Journal Title: Polish Journal of Microbiology - Year 2015, Vol 64, Issue 2
Abstract
[b][/b]Sulfate-reducing microbial communities were enriched from soils collected in areas with crude-oil exploitation. Cultures were grown in modified Postgate C medium and minimal medium, with ethanol or lactate as an electron donor. The batch cultures were grown with addition of zinc in concentrations of 100–700 mg/l. A lack of increased protein concentration in the solutions compared with the control batch, was noted in cultures containing over 200 mg Zn[sup]2+[/sup]/l. The 16S rRNA method was applied to determine the specific composition of the selected microorganism communities. The analysis indicated the presence of [i]Desulfovibrio[/i] spp., [i]Desulfobulbus[/i] spp. and [i]Desulfotomaculum[/i] spp. in the communities. Diffractometric analysis indicated the presence of biogenic sphalerite in cultures with 100 and 200 mg Zn[sup]2+[/sup]/l and elemental sulfur in cultures with 200 mg Zn[sup]2+[/sup]/l. Other post culture sediments (300−700 mg Zn[sup]2+[/sup]/l) contained only hopeite [Zn[sub]3[/sub](PO[sub]4[/sub])[sub]2[/sub] [sup].[/sup] 4H[sub]2[/sub]O] formed abiotically during the experiment, which was confirmed by studies of the activity of sulfate-reducing microbial communities.

Molecular Characterization of Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli Strains Isolated in Poland
Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains also called verotoxin-producing E. coli (VTEC) represent one of the most important groups of food-borne pathogens that can cause several human diseases such as hemorr...
Relationship between measles outbreaks based on genetic analysis of measles virus genomes detected in patients in Poland between 2006 and 2012.T
This study describes the molecular characterization of 56 MeV strains obtained from clinical samples collected from 56 patients in Poland from 2006 to 2012. MeV RNA samples were analysed according to variability of C-ter...
Enteroviruses Associated with Aseptic Meningitis in Poland, 2011–2014
A 4-year study (2011–2014) of patients with meningitis was performed. Out of the 686 cerebrospinal fluid sles, 465 (67.8%) were positive for eneteroviruses using RT-PCR and out of 334 clinical sles, 216 (64.7%) were posi...
Isolation and Antimicrobial Testing of Aeromonas spp., Citrobacter spp., Cronobacter spp., Enterobacter spp., Escherichia spp., Klebsiella spp., and Trabulsiella spp. from the Gallbladder of Pigs
The presence of Gram-negative bacteria species, other than [i]Salmonella[/i] spp., in the gallbladder of pigs was examined. Isolated Gram-negative bacteria were assigned to species using the MicrogenTM GnA+B-ID Syst...
The Usefulness of Biosynthetic Vascular Graft Omniflow II and Autologous Veins for the Treatment of Massive Infection of Dacron Vascular Graft with Enterococcus faecalis HLAR
Infections of vascular grafts are the most severe complications in vascular surgery. We present the case of a 73-year-old male with infection of a dacron prosthesis with a strain of Enterococcus faecalis. The patient was...
