Biomonitoring of the Cytomorphometric Changes in Oral Keratinized Mucosa Exposed to Panoramic Radiography
Journal Title: Journal of Medical Research and Practice - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 1
Abstract
Background Ionizing radiations have the potential to cause cytotoxic changes in the oral mucosa. Aim To evaluate the cytomorphometric changes in the oral keratinized mucosa (gingiva) in patients exposed to X-ray during panoramic radiography. Method This is a cross-sectional study, conducted in the Department of Oral Pathology, Dhulikhel Hospital, Dhulikhel, Nepal, involving apparently healthy in dividuals who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, requiring panoramic radiography. Gingival smears were taken after obtaining the informed consent from the patient, prior exposure to X-rays during Panoramic radiography and 10 days post exposure and stained using rapid Papanicolaou (PAP) stain. Slides were observed using a compound light microscope under 400x magnification. Results Cytomorphometric analyses of the oral keratinized mucosa (gingiva), Showed a slight variation in the nuclear and cellular parameters but statistically significant co-relation was not observed in any of the cellular and nuclear parameters. Conclusion Oral keratinized mucosal cells did not show any significant cytomorphometric changes after exposure to X-rays during panoramic radiography. A study involving a larger sample size is required to further evaluate these radiation effects on oral keratinized cells.
