Burnout syndrome in mothers raising a child with intellectual disability
Journal Title: Szkoła Specjalna - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue 1
Abstract
This research report focuses on determining the level of burnout in mothers of children with intellectual disabilities. The level of burnout in the mothers of children with intellectual disabilities participating in the study was compared to the level of burnout in mothers of nondisabled children. Analysis of the data collected with the adapted Maslach Burnout Inventory showed that the mean scores obtained in the individual subscales by the mothers taking care of their children with intellectual disabilities on a regular basis were higher than those obtained by the mothers raising nondisabled children, which reveals increased burnout in the mothers in the main group. Analysis of the issue of burnout in the mothers taking care of their children with intellectual disabilities proves that they face a high risk of being affected by this syndrome. It is necessary to emphasize that statistically significant differences were found in two out of three burnout subscales, and the burnout symptom that dominated in the mothers of children with intellectual disabilities was a much higher level of emotional exhaustion as compared to the mothers of nondisabled children. Burnout syndrome develops, for example, when parents - mothers in particular - become overburdened with long-term care and responsibility for the treatment and education of their children with intellectual disabilities. It is therefore important to relieve mothers of excessive duties and provide them with specialist support. Otherwise, there's a real danger that their daily struggle with the burden of taking care of their children with disabilities will lead to a feeling of burnout.
