BY «THRILLING» VOICE OF UNDINE: GENDER AS THE CONSTRUCT OF CULTURAL IMAGINARY IN THE SHORT STORY OF INGEBORG BACHMANN «UNDINE GEHT»

Abstract

The object of the article is the short story of the Austrian poetess and author Ingeborg Bachmann «Undine geht». The article is an attempt to illustrate the representation of gender in the text. The gender analysis and cultural studies are applied to define re(de)construction of the meaning of femininity and masculinity as they are applied to the category of the woman and the man. The category of sex as a complex symbolic construct of the cultural imaginary («Das kulturelle Imaginäre») allows deep cultural revisions – images and social practices of creating gender. The text of Bachmann’s story subverts social-cultural binary images of femininity and masculinity by means of special poetic manner while situating the category of the woman in a pre-discursive, a-political realm. The main character Undine as a mythological water woman speaking under the water gets her status of pre-discursive female substance, a metaphor of arts itself, while the symbolism of water intensifies a sense of otherness, signifies an idea of pure arts. They are easily to be re(de)constructed by means of artistic method of I. Bachmann: story plot centering around mystical female creature Undine, ironically mythological mode, symbolism of the water space and poetics of unspeakable. Undine’s water monologue washes cultural codes, eliminating stereotypes, hermetic margins and in such a way stimulating powerful semantic dynamics. The gender and cultural analysis proves that gender functions as a flexible semantic constructs.
