Catalonia and the Río de la Plata: trade and immigration (1776-1820)

Abstract
Aprincipios del siglo XVIII se produjeron una serie de cambios en el comercio internacional debido al desarrollo de las compañías comerciales inglesas y holandesas en las Indias Orientales, mucho más efcaces que los monopolios comerciales españoles y portugueses. Esto permitió el trafco de nuevos productos (como por ejemplo: tejidos, té y azúcar) y modifcaciones en los intercambios (el trueque de metales preciosos fue reemplazado por el de especias orientales). De esta forma “América se convirtió en uno de los pilares del sistema inglés que articulaba cuatro continentes...”1. Internamente en España el crecimiento demográfco condujo a un aumento de la producción y de los precios de los productos agrícolas2 que no se manifestó homogéneamente en industrias y manufacturas.
