Challenge and Response: A Study on the Special Olympics Unified Schools Program in China

Abstract

Background/purpose: The Special Olympics Unified Schools Program has a positive effect on improving the personal development of students with intellectual disabilities. Methods: By combing the history of the development of the Special Olympics Unified Schools Program through the method of literature and on-site observation in China, and as the technical team of the Special Olympics International East Asia Region, we will provide on-site guidance to nearly 100 Special Olympics Unified Schools Program activities nationwide between 2017-2021. Results: The study found that the Special Olympics Unified Schools Program in China dates back as far as 1987, and it was officially launched at 2015. Subsequently, after the launch of the new five-year plan of Special Olympics International East Asia Region, and Special Olympics Unified Schools Program has a quantitative and qualitative leap. However, there are also considerable challenges, which are embodied in the areas of insufficient awareness of inclusion and poor science in the evaluation of activities. Conclusion: It is expected that the Special Olympics Unified Schools Program will continue to grow in China and benefit more students with intellectual disabilities. Suggests: In the future, the Special Olympics Unified Schools Program in China should improve the level of public awareness of the inclusion concept,design the selection criteria related to the indigenous Special Olympics Unified Schools Program, establish a feedback mechanism after the activities of the Special Olympics Unified Schools Program, and strengthen the scientific nature of the evaluation methods of Special Olympics Unified Schools Program, in order to optimize the development level of the Special Olympics Unified Schools Program in China.
