Abstract
Christian doctrine appears to be the most interesting study area for a modern linguist. It is not monotonous by its nature and is characterized by an extremely interdisciplinary character. Religious discourse serves as a special type of institutional discourse which provides conditions for religious communication. As far as Christian religious discourse refers to the communicative discourse type, it contains two directions – horizontal (God – person) and vertical (person – person) relationships. Although considerable amount of research has been devoted to religious discourse studies, few attempts have been made to systematize its types. The purpose of our research is to classify the types and subtypes of Christian religious discourse. In order to achieve our goal, we set such objectives as to examine the theoretical fundamentals of the delineation of discourse in general and religious discourse in particular and to determine the typological criteria for religious discourse branches. Moreover, our own classification of religious discourse types and subtypes has been offered. The data show that Christian discourse demarcation incorporates different religious types and subtypes. We dis- tinguish the following Christian religious discourse types: (1) church discourse embracing sermon discourse, prayer discourse and discourse of a Christian song and poem; (2) biblical discourse comprising its Old and New Testament subtypes, (3) biblical poetic and prose books discourse including prophetic discourse, discourse of Psalms, discourse of Proverbs, apocalyptic discourse, discourse of a historical novel and epistolary discourse; (4) theological discourse and peculiarly theolinguistic one; (5) APEPT discourse characterizing Christian personality – apostolic discourse, discourse of the Prophet, evangelical discourse, pastoral discourse and teacher discourse; (6) intersdisciplinary religious discourse types – religious and historical, philosophical, legal, political, sociological, economic, publicistic, cultural, geographi- cal, psychological, ethnological and art discourse. The results show that Christian religious discourse is a multifaceted phenomenon in modern linguistic science. Sum- marizing the results of our analysis, it is worth noting that, each discourse wing can be seen as a linguistic science and as a certain methodological approach used to analyze the language of Christian religion. We advocate our further research on the genre variation of Christian religious discourse.
