Journal Title: Актуальні питання гуманітарних наук: Міжвузівський збірник наукових праць молодих вчених Дрогобицького державного педагогічного університету - Year 2018, Vol 19, Issue 1
Abstract
The article describes definitions of the concepts of “case”, “case-study method”. In English terminology, case is a description of a real situation or true life. Case is built on events that have taken place in reality and it is offered by authors to provoke a discussion, awaken students to discuss and analyze and make decisions in the classroom. The case- study method allows to create a role system where students can take certain social and professional positions. A sample of artificially created case (educational situation) is an effective means of teaching of foreign lexical material during the future English teachers’ training. The use of short stories describing the real events, motivates students to exchange ideas actively (a dialogue of thoughts), arguments (a dialogue-discussion), provides the implementation of interpersonal relationships and the principle of individualization of learning. Cases can be used at different stages of the lesson with a different educational purpose. The case-study method trains the use of communicative (compensatory) and discursive strategies (encouragement to exchange ideas, initiate a dialogue, etc.). In the article the case-study method in teaching of foreign lexical material is considered, which gives the process of future English teachers’ training in the higher educational institution a positive-stimulating character. The main attention is paid to the cases used in teaching of foreign lexical material on the principles of a communicative-cognitive approach. The educational situations from the Case “Professional Choice” were selected and substantiated during the study the topic “Making a Career” with the second year students in “Practice of oral and written speech”. The pedagogical potential of educational situations or cases is significant in teaching of foreign lexical material during the training of future English teachers, because: there is a constant interaction between teachers and students, selection of forms of behavior is conducted, the motivation of own actions arises, classes are characterized by emotional color, creating an atmosphere of cooperation and competition at the same time, overcoming conflicts, etc.
