Claims of women workers in the fshing industry. A perspective of class and gender from collective labor agreements (Mar del Plata, 1942 - 1975)

Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2010, Vol 3, Issue 3

Abstract

The fsh industry is one of the most important economic activities in the city of Mar del Plata. Nevertheless, in spite of its trajectory in local and national economy, the historiography has neglected those who have motorized this activity. This is an approach to a social subject hidden between the ribbings of history: the working women of the fsh who have maintained this industry since it took its frst steps at the beginning of the 20th century. The challenge of our research is to cross the categories of class and gender through the study of this important local industry. We propose to offer a background of the process of work and gremial activity as well as to understand the representations of these women who lived with the double weight of being wage-earning and housewives at the same time. The temporary cut runs from the frst statement of claims passed in 1942 to the convention signed in 1975. We will also refer tangentially to the insertion of the anarchist current in the gremial life of these workers because it is an innovation to fnd vital anarchism in the 1940s and its disputes with peronism. With this proposal we try mainly to contribute with a new study of case to historiography on labor movement, focusing in the silenced voices of the feminine gender.
