Climate of mathematics through English instruction (CLIL method)

Abstract

The paper presents a case study focusing on the climate of the teaching of mathematics in a concrete school. The quantitative characteristics of the climate are based on questionnaires and interviews. The study presents research results conducted in connection with implementation of the teaching of mathematics in a foreign language. After analyzing interviews with teachers and pupils together with the analysis of the questionnaires, the paper describes changes of the climate of the mathematics teaching in a diff erent language than the mother tongue from the teachers’ as well as the pupils’ point of view. At the same time, the paper identifies possible causes of the changes and describes in detail teaching methods and characteristics of the teaching and learning environment.
