Journal Title: Analele Universitatii Dunarea de Jos din Galati, Fascicula XVII, Medicina - Year 2015, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
Clinical manifestations of Salmonella spp. range from subclinical to severe. Most cases are self-limiting gastroenteritis, while septicaemia is a rare condition. Analysis of Salmonella spp. bacteraemia case series (8 reports) from the Infectious Diseases Hospital Galați (2013-2014). Salmonella bacteraemia was recorded in 8 patients, representing 16.6 % of Salmonella infections and 0.1 % of admitted cases. Patient characteristics: median age 60 years [24,70], preponderant males, living rural areas, association of chronic liver disease, systemic inflammatory response. Evolution was favourable in all patients. Isolates were classified in Group B (2/6), C (3/6) and D (3/6). Most infections were community acquired. Ampicillin resistance was found in 6/8 isolated strains. The peculiarities of cases were discussed. Invasive salmonellosis is associated with older age, male gender and chronic liver diseases. Invasive strains of Salmonella spp. maintain their sensitivity to 3rd generation cephalosporins, remaining the first therapeutic option
