EVOLUTION TRENDS OF TREPONEMA PALLIDUM INFECTIONS. A THREE-YEAR SURVEY

Abstract

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It may also be transmitted mother-to-child (congenital syphilis). The present study aims at determining the prevalence of Treponema pallidum infections in Galati County and at the identification of the evolution trends of this infection. The study emphasises the decreasing trend of Treponema pallidum infection during the three-year survey, a trend also present in the data reported by Romania to ECDC during 2011-2014. The decreasing trend of syphilis cases in our hospital was obvious both for men and women, all heterosexual. The most exposed age group was that of 35-44 years, followed by the 20-24 age group, which is not an agreement to data reported by ECDC at the European level. The incidence in people aged from 15 to 19 years, although infrequent, seems to be slightly on the rise. The latent forms of syphilis were most frequently diagnosed – 53%. The obvious clinical forms, represented by primary, secondary and tertiary syphilis accounted for 47% of the total cases. The syphilis cases had a decreasing trend both for men and women, active detection being predominant in the diagnostic of this old disease. Unmarried and unemployed people made up the majority of patients diagnosed with syphilis. The most affected age group was that of 35-44 years. The latent forms of syphilis were more frequent than the symptomatic ones.
