Clinicopathological evaluation of thrombocytosis in correlation with platelet and RBC indices in a tertiary care teaching hospital of Uttar Pradesh
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 9, Issue 2
Abstract
Background: Thrombocytosis refers to a platelet count above the normal value i.e count more than 450×109/L. Today, with the widespread use of electronic cell counters and the subsequent availability of a platelet count as part of a `routine' blood count, thrombocytosis is more often observed as an unexpected finding2 Aims and Objectives: To identify the etiology of thrombocytosis with clinical correlation. To analyze platelet indices. To analyze red blood cell indices. Material and Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted at department of Pathology of SIMS, Hapur, India. A total of 250 cases of were included in the study during period from January 2017 to June 2018. Observations-In a paediatric population under most circumstances, thrombocytosis is reactive in nature, most commonly observed among Boys under 2 years of age. Conclusion: Primary thrombocytosis is extremely rare. The most common etiology of secondary thrombocytosis in children is infections and is a transient phenomenon with no major clinical implications.
