COGNITIVE PECULIARITIES OF ECHO QUESTIONS’ FUNCTIONING; MENTAL PROCESSES

Abstract

The article sets out to investigate cognitive peculiarities of echo questions functioning in conversational discourse, centring on the verbal markers of mental processes that accompany the realization of the former. To this end, cognitive, contextual and discourse analyses are employed drawing on the data from English fiction of the ХХth and ХХІst centuries and contemporary films. The novelty of the study lies in viewing echo questions as language units indicative of the mental processes which take place while perceiving and processing interlocutor’s utterances. The article explores the impact of mental processes such as sensation, perception, thinking, and memory on the functioning of echo questions. It also analyses the dynamic role of attention in conversational discourse. The results may be used in future research establishing the role of mental processes in the functioning of echo questions relative to other contextual (sociocultural) factors.
