Complications related to presence of Meckel’s diverticulum as a form of remnant of vitelline duct.

Abstract
Meckel’s diverticulum is the most common congenital malformation of the gastrointestinal tract. It appears due to non adequate obliteration of the omphalomesenteric duct between the 7th and 8th week of gestation. Any disturbances of this process result in miscellaneous anomalies depending on the extent of the omphalomesenteric duct involution. The authors analyzed the course of disease in 200 children operated on between 2006 and 2008 due to surgical abdomen symptoms, in whom Meckel’s diverticulum was searched for. In analyzed 200 cases Meckel’s diverticulum was found in 12 patients. In each case diagnosis was established intraoperatively. 10 patients (83.3%) had an asymptomatic Meckel’s diverticulum and were qualified for surgery due to peritoneal symptoms caused by appendicitis. Two children were hospitalized due to intestinal obstruction and lower part of gastrointestinal tract bleeding resulting from the presence of the diverticulum. The authors discuss complications related to the presence of this anomaly outlining the importance of examining of small intestine and various dissection techniques. To illustrate the problem related to Meckel’s diverticulum the case reports of 4 patients were presented.
