CONCEPTUALIZATION OF HOMELAND IN THE OLD TURKISH LANGUAGE

Abstract
The article deals with the evolution process of conceptualization of the homeland in the ancient Turkic language, rst written sources of which are the Orkhon monuments and rst Turkic monuments written in Arabic. Conceptual structure, proposed by Y.S. Stepanov, is methodological basis of the research. Within the scope of the research vast period of the Turkic steppe empires in the context of the Turkish ethnogenesis and the first Turkish-Islamic states before the foundation of the Ottoman empire has being examined. Influence of Tengriism, prevailing religion of the ancient Turks, on their worldview and understanding of homeland as well as historical processes, leading to the Islamization of Turks and subsequent adoption of Arabic lexemes have been studied. Basic lexemes of the old Turkic, meaning homeland, have been marked out («yer su», «il» and «yurt»), their historical meanings as well as etymological connections have been researched and parallels with the modern Turkish language have been made. Since the Islamic influence resulted in incorporation of Arabic vocabulary into the Turkish lexicon, Arabic loanwords, representing homeland, have been also identied. Research has showed, that Arabic lexeme «vatan» in the meaning of homeland acquired wide spread usage in the Turkish language, at the same time lexeme «yurt» of the Turkic origin is also currently being used.
