Copyright in Hebrew Printing: 16th -18th Centuries
Journal Title: Journal of the Human and Social Science Researches - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 2
Abstract
In Hebrew printing, haskamot (rabbinical approbations) are used in three different purposes: approval, praise and copyright. The last form of approbation grants the author and/or publisher a copyright for a specific book. Typically, this approbation would prohibit republishing that particular book for a period of years. In some instances, not only printing the same book but also any book in the field/genre was prohibited. By doing so, printers often become subject to ban from publishing and distributing that book in that region. This led some publishers to prepare fake approbations for their books. In this article the birth of copyright in Hebrew printing and the problems that encountered in the course of time will be examined and evaluated.
