Cotard Syndrome, Catatonia and Depression in Older Adults

Abstract

Introduction: Cotard syndrome is considered a very rare neuropsychiatric condition that expresses the patient's denial of his own existence, even of the external environment that surrounds him. Catatonia is a complex condition with variable presentations and is associated with multiple disorders, which can make recognition, diagnosis and treatment a challenging process for healthcare professionals.Objective: Determine diagnosis of Cotard syndrome, Catatonia and Depression in Older Adults. Materials and methods: This case report refers to a patient under the care of the Psychiatry Service of the Hospital for Comprehensive Care of the Elderly, after which a bibliographic review was carried out about Cotard Syndrome, Catatonia, Depression and reports case, obtaining the appropriate informed consent to guarantee the confidentiality and protection of the patient's personal information.Results: Catatonic symptoms are often associated with various psychological and neurological disorders, including schizophrenia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, among others. The association of depressive-type affective disorders together with psychotic symptoms such as the nihilistic ideation described within Cotard Syndrome and its progression to Catatonia is a rare case due to the lack of case reports due to the lack of definitive clinical criteria. and instruments to evaluate the syndrome. Conclusion: Timely intervention of catatonia becomes vital to prevent any long-term morbidity. Doctors must maintain a high level of suspicion when taking the clinical history and chronological evolution of symptoms
