CRITICISM AND FEEDBACK – The Mighty Difference!!

Journal Title: IDA Ludhiana's Journal - Le Dentistry - Year 2018, Vol 2, Issue 3

Abstract

Ever since the evolution of mankind happened, everyone got involved in some kind of work or the other. We kept on working till we got what we needed or till we got tired. Then began the era of improvement, where we started learning from each other, as well as by comparing our new work with the older one. The evolutionary process went on good until we invented something known as EGO, a disciplinary factor which was just a deterrent at work but soon became a drug for the man’s survival. Of course, this all does chip in when one’s stomach is full and you still want to earn more for many coming rainy days. No sooner did this Ego step into the life of every common man who now and then began fighting with every other human being who did not appraise his work. Such is the scenario nowadays that when you fill a feedback form, you have to leave it as anonymous to let someone know how they performed. Things (praise/complaints) and people that had to be valued and respected are now thrown in the dustbin (the feedback forms) without giving them the due importance. It has become so evident to everyone that no one is now even bothered to help the other person improve in their work. This is the common scenario which we see and feel everywhere. Be it cinema houses, restaurants, travel partners or agencies, gyms and even hospitals and for that matter even dental clinics; everywhere either feedback is not even asked or not given the due credit. We instead tend to develop a sense of enmity to the concerned individual. Much of it is due to our Ego and the rest is because some people take it as an opportunity to criticise the worker unnecessarily too. Hence, it becomes important to understand the basic difference between Feedback, which can help us improve our clientele not only for professional houses but for everyone; and unnecessary Criticism, which is nothing but taking a dig at someone for just no reason relatable. So the next question and actually the only question that comes in one’s mind is that how can we differentiate between feedback (with a positive intent) and criticism (with a negative intent). A very simple answer to all this mess up of the brain is AN OPEN MIND, keep an open mind to understand why this person behaved liked this in the first instance, and if you feel you can improvise on even one small thing based on the other person’s input, do it. This will not only help in improving your work, but also let the criticiser/feedback providing person understand that his word is being respected. Such is the lack of love in the world that this will help improve interpersonal relations and solving many more issues of criticism vs feedback than we once thought are getting into our heads day by day. Happy healing!!
