CROWN DEFOLIATION OF SCOTS PINE STANDS IN ZŁOCZEW FOREST DISTRICT

Journal Title: Zarządzanie ochroną przyrody w lasach - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 1

Abstract

Scots pine is the most important species Polish forests. The aim of the study was to estimate the average loss of assimilation apparatus of the selected pine stands in the Złoczew Forest District, variant: social class of tree regardless of the position and taking into account belonging to I, II and III classes Kraft. The assessment of loss of assimilation apparatus was made for 450 trees in 9 randomly selected stands in June 2012. Basic descriptive statistics were performed using Statistica 10 PL. The biggest loss of needles was recorded in the third grade Kraft (20.29%), the smallest in the class I (15.63%). The average loss of needles in the 60 year-old stands stood at 18.18% in stands between 60 and 100 years old - 17.50%, 19.00% in older. 356 trees were damaged to the small extent, no damage was observed in 56 pine trees, one tree was damaged heavily. The analysis of % variable of defoliation without regard to the position of the social class of trees showed significant differences between the studied areas. Between the Kraft classes for the variable under consideration, i.e. the percentage of defoliation there were significant differences between 1st , 2nd and 3rd class of Kraft at the significance level of alpha = 0.05. Analyzing 1st and 2nd class of Kraft's total compared to the third grade of Kraft % defoliation variable analysis showed significant differences between these groups. The obtained results allow us to conclude that the observed foliage crowns of pine trees in the Złoczew Forest District are in good condition. There is no need to make changes in the existing breeding procedure established for the Forest District.
