CURSES AS PAREMIOLOGICAL UNITS WITH NEGATIVE CONNOTATION IN UKRAINIAN LINGUOCULTURE

Abstract

The main purpose of paroemias (and curses as components of paremiological paradigm) is to mark in short verbal way traditional values, beliefs, attitudes, which are based on personal life experience, the experience of the group (professional, age, social class), ethnic group and represent peculiarities of individual’s and ethnic group’s worldviews, its estimated stereotypes and specificity of word creation. Most researchers consider, that curses are expressions, which regard to sacred sphere, that belongs to religious cult and ritual. As to curses – it often appeals to the underworld and mystic sphere, and also sacralization represents the process of formation of society and its culture. The most common division parameter of sacred texts is ‘the sphere of usage’ on magic (ritual), including curses and religious (universal). Household curses are considered to be desacralized. Concepts from the sphere of economic activity and natural phenomena dominate in the Ukrainians’ mentality. The keywords in cusres (and threats) are those to denote the environment, household items and economic activity, names of domestic animals, insects. The article attempts to explain the influence power of curses’ semantics and imperativeness, differentiates the character of expressiveness.
