Cutaneous sensitizations and allergies to house dust mites among adults patients with rhinitis or asthma followed at Parakou in the North of Benin

Journal Title: JOURNAL OF FUNCTIONAL VENTILATION AND PULMONOLOGY - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 31

Abstract

Introduction. Allergic diseases are very common and alter the quality of life of patients. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of skin sensitization and allergy to Dermatophagoïdes pterronyssinus (Der_p), Dermatophagoïdes farinae (Der_f) and Blomia tropicalis (Blo_t), the three most common house dust mites. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted between July and September 2018. Patients aged ≥18years-old, suspected of allergic rhinitis and/or asthma, and who were receiving care at CHUD Borgou were included, after their formal consent. They were interviewed and skin testing with the three dust mites was carried out. Results. Overall, 84 patients were included (62 cases of allergic rhinitis, 8 cases of asthma and 14 cases of both diseases). Skin testing was validated for 83 patients. The prevalence of sensitization to at least one dust mite was 67.5%, male-female ratio of 0.65, mean age of 29.5(±9.9)years. This prevalence was 48.2%, 36.1% and 41%, for De_p, Der_f and Blo_t respectively. The prevalence of simultaneous sensitization to the three mites was 28.9%. The mean papule diameters in sensitized subjects were 5.43(±1.34)mm, 5.60(±2.01)mm and 5.06(±1.43)mm, respectively for Der_p, Der_f and Blo_t (p=0.376). This sensitization was found in 68% of allergic rhinitis, and in 66.7% of asthma cases (p=0.970). The prevalence of allergy to house dust mites was 66.3%. Conclusion. Skin sensitization and dust mite allergy are very common in patients. They require more attention limited resources settings.
