CYTOTOXIC EFFECT OF ALPINIA NIGRA CRUDE EXTRACTS OBTAINED FROM ITS RHIZOMES

Journal Title: International Journal of Pharmacognosy - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue 1

Abstract

The present study was aimed to investigate the cytotoxic activity of different fractions (petroleum ether, ethyl acetate & chloroform) of the rhizome of Alpinia nigra – a plant belonging to the family Zingiberaceae. The rhizome of Alpinia nigra was extracted with organic solvent, and the extracts were fractionated by using three fractions (petroleum ether, ethyl acetate & chloroform). The petroleum ether, ethyl acetate & chloroform soluble fractions of Alpinia nigra were screened for cytotoxic activity using brine shrimp lethality bioassay. A reputed cytotoxic agent vincristine sulphate was used as a positive control. From the results of the brine shrimp lethality bioassay it can be well predicted that petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and chloroform-soluble fractions of Alpinia nigra rhizome possess cytotoxic principles (with LC50 1.245 mg/ml and LC50 2.151 mg/ml and LC50 2.737 mg/ml respectively) comparison with positive control vincristine sulphate (with LC50 0.563 mg/ml). All the extracts of Alpinia nigra showed moderate cytotoxic activities in this experiment. The results of this study are highly promising.
