Damage Imaging Technique of Plate-like Structures with Guided Waves Phased Array

Abstract

The method of guided waves phased array beamforming formula and damage imaging method based on the delay-and-sum principle in thin metal plate structure were presented.Moreover, the phased array beamforming and imaging algorithms were performed in frequency domain by considering the Lamb wave dispersion effect.Numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed damage identification technique localizes the damage sites effectively.To verify the effectiveness of the method, the PZT-SLDV hybrid system was established to realize the damage detection of metal aluminium plate in experiments.The system includes the piezoelectric transducer (PZT) for exciting an ultrasonic Lamb wave and the non-contact scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV) for acquiring guided wave-field data.The damage imaging of aluminum plate was realized by the proposed guided-wave phased array imaging algorithm.The experimental results show that this phase delay guided-wave damage imaging method in frequency domain improves the accuracy of the damage imaging and effectively locates the area compared with traditional time delay method.
